Samson Inc started as a family farm / feedyard that has blended traditional agriculture production with agricultural services towards a goal of increasing opportunities through value-added services and networks.
Here at Samson, our history is deep-rooted in the agricultural community. An integral part of our background comes from the family-owned feedyard that was operated by Scott Mueller for twenty years while launching into the non-traditional agricultural product and service centers. While most of the cattle were fed to finish, Scott also developed heifers and provided AI services. Some of those heifers ended up being the foundation of a 200 cow herd Scott operated until 2005. The 2,500 head feedyard is now operated by Scott Schmid and his sons, Ethan and Fletcher. The feedyard is located 12 miles northwest of Columbus.
In our early days, Samson expanded into the Purina Feed Dealership. Our goal was to provide quality feed products at a reasonable price. Even though we are no longer selling Purina Feeds, we are constantly reminded and thankful for lessons learned from all of our Purina relationships. Today, many of our customers can be traced back to our work with Purina Mills. Shortly after starting the Feed Dealership, Samson expanded the feedlot and added a composting enterprise. We utilized feedlot wastes with lawn clippings to produce compost for our land and sold the excess to area farmers.
One of our most successful endeavors has been our transition into the PVP sector. The Samson PVP is a USDA approved program that verifies production activities for value added markets. Our programs include Source & Age (SAV), Non-Hormone Treated Cattle (NHTC), Samson Verified Natural (SVN) and more! Check out our PVP Services page here to learn more!
The other foundation stone is the crop production unit. The irrigated corn / soybean rotation allows Samson to raise the majority of the corn it feeds. Compost served as the main fertilizer source completing the full-circle system.
The Evans House is a Historic Landmark on the edge of Columbus' business district and serves as the Samson office. The 1911 building was built as a home for the Dr. C.D. Evans family. The house has also served the community as the Elks Lodge, the Landmark Restaurant, numerous businesses and the "Bunny Club." Unfortunately, the community remembers the 4 year period of the Bunny Club better than the contributions to our area from the Evans family. We are currently working at restoring the building to its original ambiance. You can follow our progress on Facebook.
Shortly after opening Traditions Inn in 1998, we became known as the first Certified Angus Beef Licensed Restaurant / Feedlot combination in the United States. Serving thousands of CAB steaks has engrained our belief that quality pays big dividends in the beef industry. There is nothing like having a customer remark, "that was the best steak I have ever eaten." Traditions Inn served their final meal in 2018 completing 20 years of food service.
